A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE 1911
The M1911 is one of the most recognizable handguns in American history. Designed by John Browning, the single-action semiautomatic pistol was officially adopted by the U.S. Army on March 29, 1911, which gave the pistol its name.
The M1911 and later M1911A1 variants served as the standard U.S. military sidearm for much of the 20th century, until the Beretta M9 began replacing it in the 1980s.
